SPARTA Golf Society
More Than a Century of Golfing Tradition
The SPARTA Golf Society is one of SPARTA's oldest and most prestigious clubs, with a proud history stretching back over 100 years.
The Society's origins can be traced to 1921, when the then Minister of Health, Sir Alfred Mond, chaired a meeting, supported by the 2nd Viscount Astor, to establish a golf society for staff. What began as a small departmental society has evolved over the decades into the thriving and welcoming club that exists today.
The Society continued under the Ministry of Health before re-emerging after the Second World War within the Ministry of Housing, later the Ministry of Housing and Local Government (MHLG). Following the creation of the Department of the Environment in 1971, several departmental golf societies continued to operate independently until they merged in the late 1990s.
In 2002, the Society adopted its current name, the SPARTA Golf Society, reflecting its affiliation with SPARTA and its commitment to providing high-quality sporting opportunities for members.
A Warm Welcome for Golfers of All Abilities
Today, the Society welcomes current and former staff from both the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities and the Department for Transport.
Whether you are a low-handicap golfer, an occasional player, or someone returning to the game after a break, you will find a friendly and supportive atmosphere. The Society prides itself on combining competitive golf with an emphasis on enjoyment, camaraderie and inclusivity.

The Society organises six major events each year at a selection of high-quality golf courses across London and the Home Counties.
Each event offers a full day of golf and hospitality, including:

SPARTA (North) Golf Society
Bringing Golf to SPARTA Members Across the North
Following growing interest from staff based across the North of England, SPARTA has been working with members to establish an exciting new golf society dedicated to golfers living and working outside the South East.
The SPARTA Northern Golf Society has been created to provide the same great opportunities for competitive and social golf that members have enjoyed for many years through the SPARTA Golf Society, while making events more accessible for those based in northern regions.
A Great Start
The Society's inaugural event took place in April 2025, bringing together SPARTA members with a shared love of golf for a fantastic day of competition, networking and camaraderie.
The success of this first event has laid the foundations for a growing calendar of activities, with further events planned as the Society continues to develop and attract new members.
Golf for All Abilities
Whether you're an experienced golfer, a weekend player, or someone looking to get back into the game after a break, the Northern Golf Society welcomes players of all abilities.
The focus is on enjoying great courses, meeting fellow members and creating a friendly and inclusive golfing community across the North of England.
